A Country Wake

Today I traveled to a country wake

My friend’s father, a hero, patriarch and friend

Took his flag and a hundred-dollar bill well-earned

Each foretell the twenty and one salute the guns will bark

Outside, a spring is here the robins show

Budding trees reclaim their lives anew

Inside salvation his reward, he’s paid in full

As Winter passes and breathes its last to go.
